Hadean zircon formed due to hydrated ultramafic protocrust melting

چکیده
Abstract Hadean zircons, from the Jack Hills (Western Australia) and other localities, are currently only window into earliest terrestrial felsic crust, formation of which remains enigmatic. Based upon new experimental results, generation such early crust has been hypothesized to involve partial melting hydrated peridotite interacting with basaltic melt at low pressure (<10 km), but it yet be demonstrated that liquids can indeed crystallize zircons comparable zircon. We used thermodynamic geochemical modeling test this hypothesis. The predicted zircon saturation temperatures <750 °C, together model Th, U, Nb, Hf, Y, rare earth element (REE) contents 700 ?18OVSMOW (Vienna standard mean ocean water) signatures, co-crystallizing mineral assemblage were compared those This comparison was favorable respect crystallization temperature, most trace-element contents, inclusions in discrepancy signatures may explained by hotter conditions protocrust hydration. Our work supports idea magma shallow depths involving a primordial weathered ultramafic local intrusions is viable mechanism for on Earth.

Constraints on Hadean zircon protoliths from oxygen isotopes, Ti-thermometry, and rare earth elements
[1] We report zircon oxygen isotope ratios and reconnaissance Ti-in-zircon concentrations, guided by cathodoluminescence image studies, for detrital zircons up to 4.34 Ga from the Narryer Gneiss Complex of Western Australia. Zircon oxygen isotope results bolster the view that some Hadean (>3.85 Ga) zircon source melts were enriched in heavy oxygen, a sensitive proxy for melt contamination by se...
متن کاملZircon thermometer reveals minimum melting conditions on earliest Earth.
Ancient zircons from Western Australia's Jack Hills preserve a record of conditions that prevailed on Earth not long after its formation. Widely considered to have been a uniquely violent period geodynamically, the Hadean Eon [4.5 to 4.0 billion years ago (Ga)] has recently been interpreted by some as far more benign-possibly even characterized by oceans like those of the present day. Knowledge...

Watson and Harrison (Reports, 6 May 2005, p. 841) interpreted low temperatures (approximately 700 degrees C) for Hadean zircons as evidence of the existence of wet, minimum-melting conditions within 200 million years of solar system formation. However, high-temperature melts (approximately 900 degrees C) are zircon-undersaturated and crystallize zircon only after substantial temperature drop du...

Few terrestrial localities preserve more than a trace lithic record prior to ca. 3.8 Ga greatly limiting our understanding of the first 700 Ma of Earth history, a period inferred to have included a spike in the bolide flux to the inner solar system at ca. 3.85-3.95 Ga (the Late Heavy Bombardment, LHB). An accessible record of this era may be found in Hadean detrital zircons from the Jack Hills,...
متن کاملMetamorphic replacement of mineral inclusions in detrital zircon from Jack Hills , Australia : Implications for the Hadean Earth
We appreciate that Rasmussen et al. (2011) have characterized a large number of inclusions in Jack Hills (Australia) detrital zircons, but we fi nd two signifi cant fl aws in their paper: one of scholarship and one of omission. With regard to the fi rst, their paper implies discovery of reset isotopic systems in phosphate inclusions in Jack Hills zircons. This was previously discussed by Caro e...
